SIXTH GRADE HIGHLIGHTS

 

 

 

RELIGION:  The sixth grade religion program focuses on the Old Testament.  Students come to realize that a caring love for all people is an important element to forming a relationship with God.  We celebrate mass once a week and we plan the mass at least four times each year. 

 

SOCIAL STUDIES:  The sixth grade social studies program focuses on ancient history with an emphasis on Egyptian, Greek, and Roman cultures.  Christianity is covered from its beginnings in the Roman Empire through the crusades, until 1492 when Spain conquers the Moors making Spain a united country.

 

MATH:  The sixth grade math program includes topics such as number sense, fractions, decimals, graphing, geometry, ratios, probability, problem solving skills, and order of operations.

 

SCIENCE:  Students will learn the various steps involved in the scientific method.  The sixth grade science program involves various topics in the physical sciences such as, chemistry, energy, electricity, magnetism, and waves.

 

ART:  Using the elements and principles of art, student’s use a large variety of materials to create two and three-dimensional works or art.  They are able to discover and use character traits of specific materials.  They are able to connect some art with other cultures and countries.

 

COMPUTER:  Students in grade six will use the K to the 8th computer program.  This program teaches technology literacy in the center of core academic objectives.  Students will learn new computer skills and apply them to reading, writing, and math lessons that reinforce what is being taught in the classroom.  Students will also practice keyboarding skills using the Mavis Beacon typing program.

 

LITERATURE:  Students are exposed to a variety of reading genres in the Literature program.  Each selection focuses on vocabulary, spelling, and grammar skills.  Each selection also focuses on reading fluently, character analysis, and paraphrasing skills.  Students will also read other supplemental books throughout the year.

 

ENGLISH:  The sixth grade program focuses heavily on grammar.  During the year, students will also complete a variety of writing projects.

 

OUTSIDE READING:  Students participate in the Scholastic Reading Counts program.  Each student is required to read books and pass quizzes on books in their lexile.  Students are required to successfully complete five Reading Counts tests per quarter.

 

PHYSICAL EDUCATION:  A specialist works with all students.  The program is designed to spiral so that a student may progress through different skills, from emerging to proficient levels in an activity unit.  Students develop individual and team skills that can be used in lifetime, recreational activities, and group sports.  The strategies of various games are emphasized.

 

MUSIC:  Students will study American music, including jazz, and continue learning to read music, appreciate various music styles, play various instruments and develop correct vocal techniques.

 

SPANISH:  Students will be continuing the Northern Arizona University video Spanish program.
